Mountains to Sea - Nga Ara Tuhono | Full Adventure
Tramping on wheels, your journey starts on the volcanic slopes of Mt Ruapehu. An epic full adventure ride through two national parks, rolling hill country and remote river gorges. It reaches a fitting finale at the deep, blue Tasman Sea.
This route requires a shuttle to bridge the gap between Horopito and National Park Village (which we are working on new trails to connect.). This route also takes in more remote and technical sections of trail - with all the wonderful rewards that offers.
Combine eight of the Mountains to Sea - Nga Ara Tuhono (connected pathways), to form a 296km route, including the unrideable stretch of the Whanganui River. This gap is bridged by a 32km scenic jet boat ride between the Mangapurua Track and Pīpīriki, the northern end of the Whanganui River Road. (The distance including the jet boat trip is 231km.)
The full adventure route from Ohakune to the Tasman Sea – taking in both Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks – is typically ridden in 4–6 days. Best suited to experienced riders and with a few more logistics to plan for - the rewards are immeasurable.
