Mountains to Sea Connector Ride

The Mountains to Sea Connector Ride is a picturesque journey through the volcanic plateau, linking Taumarunui (and the Timber Trail) to the Kaiwhakauka Track. or back towards Waimarino (National Park) via Fishers Track.  This connector for Mountains to Sea Great Ride offers a tranquil ride along quiet country roads, with some gravel stretches, passing scenic farmland and reserves. Around the halfway point, riders can take a worthwhile detour to the township of Owhango, which provides accommodation and access to the renowned 42 Traverse mountain bike trail.

Highlights

  • Main Route: Quiet roads, gentle gradients, and stunning vistas on the way to the Kaiwhakauka Track.

  • Owhango Detour: A 1km diversion for accommodation, access to the 42 Traverse, and the famous Blue Hill Café.

  • Kaitieke Detour: Connect to Fishers Track via the Kaitieke Horse Sculpture.

Grade: Suitable for intermediate riders comfortable with gravel roads and moderate climbs.
Facilities: Limited along the route; plan ahead for water and snacks.

Directions

Start Point

1.       Begin at the Taumarunui Railway Station:

2.       Head south on Hikaia Street for two blocks.

3.       Turn onto Moreno Terrace to cross the Whanganui River.

4.       Follow Hikumutu Road out of town.  Hikumutu Road transitions into a narrow gravel road, climbing 300 metres with rewarding countryside views.

At the T-intersection, decide your route:

  • Continuing on the Connector Ride to Whakahoro:

o   From the T-intersection, turn right to stay on Kawautuhi Road, which transitions into Oio Road.  Enjoy the gentle downhill ride with minimal traffic, soaking in the stunning views. End Point

o   The Connector Ride ends at the Oio Road junction, 21km from Blue Duck Station at Whakahoro. Here, riders can begin the Kaiwhakauka Track, and onwards to the Mangapurua section.

OR

  •   To Owhango (1km Detour):

o   Turn left onto Kawautuhi Road to reach Owhango, a charming village.

o   Highlights:  Accommodation options,  The Blue Hill Café, famous for its delicious scones, access to the 42 Traverse mountain bike trail.

o   After your visit, return to the T-intersection to continue your journey.

OR

  •   To Kaitieke / Fishers Track:

o   From the Oio Road junction, turn left.

o   This scenic route leads to the Horse Sculpture Junction, where you’ll find toilets and camping options.

o   From here, turn right onto Upper Retaruke Road, eventually connecting with the Fishers Track, a classic Grade 3 trail rich in farming heritage and surrounded by peaceful landscapes.s to Sea Cycle Trail.
